To the Coast

BIRD OF THE DAY - Javan Banded Pitta - male

Today we left the highlands and travelled in a round-about fashion to Bali's north west coast.

We travelled first to an excellent hide constructed on a mixed plantation - coffee etc - in the hills circa 700 metres above sea level.

Here the farmers had constructed both a hide - made of wooden framing and shade cloth - plus a viewing area with a mix of feeders and water features. It is the sort of small development which should be encourages for it delivers the birds to birders and photographers, it delivers another income stream to the farmers and it reminds the community of the value of both birds and ecotourism. The last point, in particular, is an asset to bird conservation.

We got excellent views of some wonderful birds.

In the afternoon after arriving we set off a short distance to the coast where a maze of salt ponds plus mangrove lined channels gave way to the sea and a stunning volcano rich vista of eastern Java.
